New Kinds of Turmoil
Comment Print
Fifteen to 20 years ago, a relatively stable paper industry started to experience turmoil. At that time, it was caused by technological change—the personal computer's new ubiquitous status and the nascent Internet. These changes dramatically affected newsprint and other printing and writing sectors of the industry. We survived.

Today, the emerging Chinese market, already 15 years old, political upheaval, never-ending environmental pressures, natural disasters (primarily earthquakes), and the coming of age of the South American pulp industry leave us firmly planted in another rocking boat.

We will survive.

More important than ever, though, is nimbleness. The staid, steady industry that developed after World War II in North America and Europe is no more. We buy equipment all over the world, we make pulp and paper products all over the world.

And we have to change quickly. New packaging concepts demand rapid response. New and heightened awareness of illness and contagious issues require rapid response from the sanitary grades. And all the time we have to monitor our energy inputs and our air and water effluents.

It is a challenge. It has been an exciting business for my entire career. I look forward to more of the same, as far as turmoil is concerned, and suggest you embrace it, too.
