Botnia's New Mill in Uruguay in Startup
Print
Metsa, Finland, 14 November 2007 -- Botnia has finished building a 1 million ton eucalyptus pulp mill in Fray Bentos in western Uruguay. The mill, which is undergoing startup, is the largest private investment in the country's history. The project will bring significant socio-economic benefits to Uruguay.

The mill received authorization to start operations from the Uruguayan government on 08 November 2007. The start-up process of Botnia's mill in Fray Bentos is on schedule and progressing well, with no major problems so far.

On the morning of 13 November, the mill started generating energy from biomass (wood residues) at the main boiler in an intermittent manner. That afternoon, the first pulp bales were produced on a trial basis. Right now, the calibration processes at the different process areas continue.

‘The first pulp bale produced on a trial basis has been the result of the effort made by the Uruguayan and Finnish technicians, who are working hand-in-hand to conclude this first stage," commented Sami Saarela, mill manager.
