Amcor PET Renamed Amcor Rigid Plastics
Print
Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, 11 March 2010 -- The former Amcor PET Packaging business based in Ann Arbor has been renamed Amcor Rigid Plastics. The new group is among seven operating units that were organized following the recent USD 1.9 billion acquisition of parts of Alcan Packaging by Amcor Ltd. of Melbourne, Australia, from London-based Rio Tinto plc.

Amcor Rigid Plastics consists of the former Amcor PET Packaging; Bericap North America, a plastic closures joint venture between Amcor and Bericap GmbH & Co. KG of Budenheim, Germany; and the plastics container unit of Alcan’s global pharmaceutical business. Bill Long, who was president of Amcor PET Packaging, will head up the new division.

The acquisition complements Amcor’s current plastics packaging business, which is geared toward PET packaging for the beverage, food, and nonfood industries. The Alcan deal moves Amcor into new applications, materials, and processes, including pharmaceutical markets.

Alcan’s rigid-container pharmaceutical business was a leading producer of polypropylene, polyethylene, and PET containers for over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and other pharmaceuticals. Amcor also expects to benefit from Alcan’s processing capabilities in stretch-blow molding, extrusion-blow molding, and injection blow molding, along with strong expertise in multimaterial processing.

The acquisition added about USD 160 million in sales and 800 employees across six plants in Millville, New Jersey; Des Plaines, Illinois; Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; and Youngsville, North Carolinia, USA; Cayey, Puerto Rico; and Diadema, Brazil.

Amcor Rigid Plastics operates 71 facilities in 12 countries. Parent company Amcor Ltd. employs 35,000, operating in 43 countries across 300 sites.
